Trebinje/Требиње (pronounced "trébinegnié") has a population of about 25,000, of which 93% are Bosnian-Serbs and 3% Bosniaks. It is the capital of the municipality of Trebinje (population 31,000), within the Bosnian Serb Republic. The city is 33 km northeast of Durbovnik (Croatia, via Ivanica), 39 km northeast of the Mouths of Kotor (Montenegro), 116 km southeast of Mostar(via Stolac and Ravno) and 133 km south of Foča(via Gacko and Bileća).Trebinje is the most pleasant and most touristy town in the Serbian Republic of Bosnia. It is also the southernmost in the whole country. Located on the border of Croatia and Montenegro, in the valley of the Trebišnica river and at the foot of karst mountains dominated by Mount Leotar (1,228 m above sea level), it enjoys a Mediterranean climate, 260 days of sunshine per year and a beautiful off-season. With its many hotels, its beautiful Platanian Square lined with cafes and its very active tourist office, Trebinje is a good starting point for exploring two great neighboring sites listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO: the city of Dubrovnik, on the Dalmatian coast, and the mouths of Kotor, on the Montenegrin shore. Its geographical location also means that it has many fortresses inherited from different occupants, starting with the old Ottoman city, largely deserted by its Bosnian inhabitants since the last war.
