Stolac/Столац (pronounced "stolats") has a population of about 3,900, of which 69% are Bosniaks and 23% Bosnian Croats. It is the capital of the municipality of Stolac (14,000 inhabitants), within the Herzegovina-Neretva canton. The town is 26 km east of Čapljina, 37 km southeast of Mostar, 38 km northeast of Neum, 59 km northwest of Bileća and 80 km northwest of Trebinje(via Ravno). Bus connections: see bus station.Nestled in the green valley of the Bregava River, Stolac is a small town still marked by the last war and still divided between Bosniaks and Bosnian-Croats. But it has an incredibly rich heritage, starting with the medieval necropolis of Radimlja: it is the most prestigious site among the twenty-eight necropolises of the Balkans listed as Unesco heritage in 2016. The city and its surroundings are themselves on the Unesco tentative list since 2007. Well placed between Mostar and Trebinje, Stolac deserves at least two days of visit. You can discover, among other things, the oldest rock carving in the eastern Adriatic, impressive Illyrian fortifications, a huge fortress in the center of the city, a beautiful group of mills, waterfalls and Ottoman villas along the Bregava River, etc. Tourist facilities are still being developed. But there are now two "tourist offices" and a first hotel opened in 2021, as well as many possibilities of accommodation with local people.
