Blagaj/Благај (pronounced "blagaille") has about 2,500 inhabitants, 98% of whom are Bosnians, and belongs to the municipality of Mostar. The village is 18 km southeast of Mostar(via Buna). There are city bus connections from the Mostar East bus station (lines 10, 11 and 12, one bus/hour on weekdays, 7/day on weekends).Blagaj is an enchantment, both for its natural surroundings and for its heritage. This village is since the Ottoman period one of the main centers of Sufism, the mystical branch of Islam, in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The dervishes chose their location well, since the tekké of Blagaj (the most famous Sufi place of worship in the Balkans) is installed right next to the magnificent spring (exsurgence) of the Buna. These two monuments, one natural, the other "spiritual" form a unique whole. This has earned Blagaj a place on the Unesco tentative list since 2017, with a view to a possible world heritage listing. To complete this postcard, the source of the Buna is dominated by a high cliff bristling with medieval fortifications: a site inhabited since the Neolithic period which housed for a time the capital of Herzegovina. In spite of the bombardments by the Yugoslav army in 1992, then by the Croatian Defense Committee in 1993, the village has been well preserved (or rebuilt), notably these old Ottoman residences which run along the Buna. One of them now houses a nice guesthouse run by a completely French-speaking owner. But there are mostly campsites here.
