Konjic/Коњиц (pronounced "keunyist") has a population of about 10,000, of which 89% are Bosniaks and 6% Bosnian Croats. It is the capital of the municipality of Konjic (population 24,000), within the Herzegovina-Neretva canton. The city is 57 km south of Sarajevo and 69 km northeast of Mostar(via Jablanica).Situated between two valleys, at the confluence of the Neretva and Trešanica rivers, and dominated by the Prenj (2,102 m), Bjelašnica (2,067 m) and Bitovnja (1,744 m) mountains, Konjic marks the break between Bosnia and Herzegovina with landscapes and climate already under Mediterranean influence. A stopover town between Sarajevo and Mostar, it has one of the most visited sites in the country: "Tito's bunker", a huge fallout shelter from the socialist period. Although the city was bombed by the Bosnian Serb army during the last war, its Old Bridge and small Ottoman center have been renovated, with two museums and many cafes. Known for its rich tradition of cabinet making, which is a Unesco World Heritage Site, Konjic is also the starting point for rafting on the Neretva River and one of the most beautiful train rides in Europe. Its surroundings are green and home to no less than twenty-three medieval stećci necropolises, one of which is a Unesco World Heritage Site. Yet Konjic struggles to establish itself as a place to stay: as it is too close to Mostar and Sarajevo, the majority of visitors only drop in for a few hours.
