Bijambare/Бијамбаре (pronounced "billanbaré") protected area is located in the municipality of Krivajevići (30 inhabitants), which is part of the municipality of Ilijaš and the canton of Sarajevo. Bijambare is 33 km southwest of Kladanj and 43 km north of Sarajevo (via the M18 towards Tuzla). There is no bus connection, but on the way from Sarajevo to Kladanj to Tuzla, ask the driver to stop there. The big cave of Bijambare is one of the main attractions in the surroundings of Sarajevo. It is actually a much larger area that has been under protection since 1965. For the Bijambare protected area is a series of eight caves (including the "middle cave" which is the largest and the only one open to visitors), a forest, rivers and springs located at an altitude of 950 m on the Nišići plateau. This area of almost 5 km2 is since 2011 called "Bijambare protected landscape" (Zaštićeni Pejzaž Bijambare). It is developed with trails, a cafe-restaurant and picnic and children's play areas. You can also see the medieval necropolis of Mramorje, whose thirty-nine stećci were moved here during the construction of the Sarajevo-Tuzla highway in 2013. Access to the protected area is charged (2 KM) with free parking at the entrance. There is also a fee to visit the cave (3 KM). You can get there by footpaths or by a small tourist train (included with the entrance fee) or by renting a bicycle (3 KM).
