Located in the centre of Sakhalin, on the edge of the Tatarski Strait, the port town of Alexandrovsk-Sakhalinski was founded in 1869. Anton Chekhov, who was arrested in Alexandrovsk in 1890, devoted a book to his trip to Sakhalin Island where he looked at prison life. The author's revelations found a broad audience with outrage, and many voices were cast in protest against the inhuman treatment suffered by those convicted of forced labour. A century after Chekhov's stay in Sakhalin was opened on the island under the name «A. Chekhov and Sakhalin», a museum of history and literature that celebrates the memory of the writer.
