Birobidjan (73,129 inhab.) is the capital of the astonishing Jewish autonomous oblast (176,558 inhab.), a curiosity unique in the world. It was founded in 1928 in place of the small Tikhognkaya station, where the Jewish settlers arrived. Located at the heart of a railway (km 8,351 of the Trans-Siberian Railway) and road communication junction, it is today the largest light industrial centre in the Far East, specialising in textiles and clothing. This economy is obviously turned towards its powerful neighbour China, which has its eye on this territory. Birobidjan's urban development plan, implemented in the 1920s, was supervised by the director of the Bauhaus, the Swiss architect Hannes Meyer. It is a little-used Trans-Siberian stopover.
