БЛАГОВЕЩЕНСК. Blagovechtchensk, 225 810 inhabitants, is the capital of the Amur Oblast. It is located on the Trans-Siberian Railway, 130 km southwest of Belogorsk, the nearest railway station (km 7,866), and is well worth a visit. First of all, because its historical centre, although recent, since it was founded in 1856, has preserved a certain something of the past, buildings, perhaps an atmosphere. Then because it wants to be international, because of its proximity to China and the city of Heihe, located just opposite, on the other side of Love. The Asian influence is very palpable there. Generally ignored by Western travellers, Blagovechtchensk, although it is well used to tourism, remains on a human scale, as pleasant and mixed as it is exotic.
