Yakutsk, population 318,768, is the capital of the Sakha Republic. It is the coldest city in the world (-8.8°C on average) and the largest ever built on permafrost. Lying literally on the left bank of the Lena River, at 62° north latitude, Yakutsk is very difficult to access: no train and very few roads, impassable in summer when the ice melts. You can only travel on land in winter, on the innumerable frozen rivers. In spite of this, its demographics continue to grow. And for good reason: its economic growth goes hand in hand with the ever-increasing exploitation of the region's mining resources. The same goes for tourism: many travellers experience the extreme cold in the region. Why not you?
