Located on the edge of the Selenga, 150 km south of Ulaanbaatar, the city was founded in 1665 by Russian cossacks as an outpost on the road to Mongolia and China. In the th century, Novosselenguinsk became an important centre of the English mission whose aim was to convert the Bouriates to Christianity, but also to provide them with medical care. After the uprising of 14 December 1825 in St Petersburg, many décembristes were exiled into this village. Today tourists can visit the Décembristes Museum and the monument to English missionaries, but also stroll along the majestic Selenga.
