At the foot of the Khamar-Daban and Ulan-Burgassy massifs, crossed by the river Uda, Ulan-Ude is an industrial and modern city of the steppe (430 000 inhabitants). Its pan-Asian roots make it a mixed city, wildly exotic. You can walk around the centre of the city, which is full of nuggets, including the most bizarre Soviet monument in Siberia: the enormous head of Lenin, which is ultimately comical despite its size (13.5 metres, 12 tonnes); one winter, some city dwellers added a chapka to it... Lenina Street, lined with the stone palaces of the merchants of yesteryear. On the other side of the street, there are log districts (Smolina Street), where the wood-burning stoves are still going strong: the twilight, draped in smoke, gives you the impression of having landed in the Wild West.
