Ulan-Ude is the capital of the Republic of Buryatia. The River Uda flows through the city. It is known for its role as a trade center between Russia, China and Mongolia. With a population of 436,406 in 2022, Ulan-Ude is the third largest city in Eastern Siberia. Ulan-Ude's city center is characterized by its richly decorated old merchant houses and the monumental sculpture of Lenin's head in the main square. The city is also home to a large ethnographic museum that traces the history of the region's peoples, as well as an important Buddhist monastery, the Ivolguinsk datsan. Economically, Ulan-Ude boasts two major industrial complexes, a locomotive and wagon repair plant and an aviation factory. The city is accessible by air from Baikal International Airport, and is served by the Transmongol railway line. Ulan-Ude also has a tramway network.
