30 km east of Sliudyanka, Baikalsk, situated on the lake shore, is an industrial city of 13,000 inhabitants. It was built around 1960 to house the workers of a cellulose factory whose controversial practices ended its activities in 2013. It is also a station of the Trans-Siberian Railway (km 5,352). Baikalsk is famous for being home to one of the region's attractions: a ski resort on the slopes of Mount Sobolinaya. The resort closes as soon as the snow melts, so avoid going there in summer.
