TOMI UNGERERER MUSEUM - ILLUSTRATION CENTRE
Petit Futé's opinion on TOMI UNGERERER MUSEUM - ILLUSTRATION CENTRE

Poster artist, cartoonist, illustrator, author, collector and inventor of objects born in 1931, Tomi Ungerer was until 2019, date of his death, the only Alsatian cartoonist who had a dedicated museum during his lifetime. An Alsatian icon recognized throughout the world for his works for children(The Three Brigands, John of the Moon...) his humorous, sometimes satirical line (we owe him many illustrations denouncing the excesses of a certain American society, mainly for the famous New-Yorker newspaper) and often even moving... Some illustrations, erotic, are however not to be put between all the hands! After having traveled the world and having committed himself to numerous causes, such as the Vietnam War and the horrors of racial segregation in the United States, this protean artist settled permanently in Cork, Ireland, in 1976, his wife's homeland and where his three children were born. The Villa Greiner exhibits 300 original works by the artist, renewed every four months. Among them, drawings and sculptures and many others from different registers, including children. At the same time, the museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions of French and foreign illustrators, mainly from the 20th and 21st centuries. Tomi's fans have access to 14,000 of his works and 1,500 toys. There is a store selling books and reproductions.
