Very interesting to reach Yakutia/Sakha Republic and Yakutsk, its capital (by boat, on the Lena River) as well as the north of the Far East (by train, BAM line). You reach Ust-Kut by plane; its airport (10 km away) serves Irkutsk and Krasnoyarsk, and of course by train, via Taïchet. The city (45,000 inhabitants) is 630 km to the north-east of the latter. It was founded by the Cossacks in 1631. In 1900, it was only a town of a few isbas, where the condemned to exile stopped. This was the case of Leon Trotsky, deported to the region (in Ma Vie, he mentions a den of drunkards and brigands). Its river port is one of the country's most important freight hubs.
