73° North latitude. A huge bay opens onto the Kara Sea. You penetrate the kingdom of the tundra, an icy desert devoid of trees, where the vegetation, grazing only in the form of mosses, lichens and twigs of polar poppy. The 700 or so souls of the town (located on the mainland) make it the northernmost inhabited area of Russia, once known as the capital of the Arctic (the largest Soviet port was established there). Today, at the antipodes of the rest of the world (although the North Pole is only a two-hour flight away), you can feel the power of the cold seas, as well as observe their wildlife, including walrus and beluga whales.
