Heading south, towards milder climates! Shushenskoye (17 000 inhab), shines by its ideal location, at the junction of the Saïan Mountains and the steppes of Minoussinsk (melons and watermelons are grown there). The small Cossack resort, founded in 1744, owes its fame to the passage of Lenin: the Bolshevik leader was exiled here from 1897 to 1900. His mother having pleaded in favour of her son's fragile health, he was leniently relegated. He married Nadejalle Krupskaya, who had followed him into exile. Nowadays, Shushenskoye is a popular tourist destination, especially for its open-air museum and its multi-ethnic World of Siberia festival. The event attracts crowds every year: a must-see!
