КРАСНОЯРСК. Krasnoyarsk, the capital of eastern Siberia, is located at km 4,098 of the Trans-Siberian Railway between Novosibirsk (11 hours' journey) and Irkutsk (about 18 hours). Its 1,066,000 inhabitants make it thethird largest city in Siberia. An industrial city in the taiga, it owes its formidable growth to its environment. First of all, the Yenisei River, a 4,053 km long waterway. Then there was gold, which made its fortune until the 19th century. Today, it is home to a world-class aluminium smelter (Rusal, 29% of Russian production). A superstructure powered by another, the titanic Divnogorsk hydroelectric plant. For those who like industrial tourism, they can be visited. But that is not its only "attraction". It has many wonders: its architecture, its culture, its gastronomy and its natural heritage make it... a must! Wherever you look in the city, all you see are those buildings and residential bars. But don't be fooled by this dormitory city decor. As you explore the city, you notice that Krasnoyarsk is a racy, warm, multifaceted and well-developed city (under the leadership of Mayor P. Pimachkov, 1996-2011). Its opulent and dynamic streets (Mira, Karla Marxa, Lenina), lined with Siberian houses, Art Deco buildings, dotted with examples of the Stalinist style, are full of surprises. There are countless must-sees here, as well as restaurants, at the top of Siberian gastronomy, where it is so pleasant to take refuge. Museums, shows, but also sports. Krasnoyarsk is a specialist in skiing and snowboarding (home of Olympic champions in hockey, skiing, snowboarding, etc.), but not only that: rugby fans will be delighted to learn that the Krasnoyarsk XV has been Russian champion several times. Krasnoyarsk, a sprawling industrial hub, is literally nestled in the taiga. This is its great singularity: countless parks, gardens, islands, natural spaces located in the city centre or less than 1 hour away, large enough to host a ski resort (Brobovy Log, for example). Several activities await you in summer and winter: snow sports, hiking, cycling, quad biking, horse riding, among others. More of a spectator than a practitioner? Treat yourself to hockey matches, competitions or skating performances at the Platinium Arena, which will be opened in 2019 for the 29th Winter Universiade. In summer, football and rugby matches are in full swing. Feel the atmosphere at the Lokomotiv (Lenina Street) and Central (Otdykha Island, 30 min by bus) stadiums. Finally, various boat trips (one or more days) are organized from the river station, located on the Yenisei quay, 10 minutes walk from the Central Museum (Ploshchad Mira 1). visitsiberia.info
