Novokuznetsk (550,000 inhabitants) is the first industrial centre in the Kuzbass coal basin. From a Cossack fortress in 1618, it was transformed into a prison fortress in 1798: today you can admire the partially reconstructed remains of this 7.5 ha mastodon (and one of its eight cannons forged in Ekaterinburg). Kuznetsk-Sibirski took off with the 1st five-year plan (1928-1932), becoming a sprawling mining centre: the Kuznetsk Metallurgical Combine (KMK) came out of the ground, to which other sites (non-ferrous metallurgy, chemistry) were added over the years. In 1964, the workers' factory-city became Stalinsk, then Novokuznetsk (1942), and in 1964 a second plant, ZapSib, now privatized and still in operation, was opened.
