НОВОСИБИРСК. Novosibirsk, population 1,618,039 in 2019, capital of Eastern Siberia and the Siberian Federal District, is the third largest city in Russia. It is also one of the 600 largest economic centres in the world. It is a sprawling city (503 km2), a railway hub (at km 3,336 of the Trans-Siberian Railway), scientific and innovative, but not only! Not very touristy, it is nevertheless a city above all cultural, housing the largest Opera of Russia, its symbol, as well as exceptional museums, of the Sun, of the Railway Technology, of the Funeral Cultures. A city of records (the largest used car market in Siberia, the longest railway bridge, among others), is Novosibirsk the-spot-to-go? Not so industrial anymore! In the 1990s, Novosibirsk abandoned a large part of its core industrial activities (aeronautics, mechanics, metallurgy). It is now a high-flying business platform, specialising in the tertiary sector (services, IT, 360° sciences). It houses some of the most secure laboratories in the world). Finally, as the former leader of the Siberian Red Belt (regions that proved to be communist in the historic federal elections of 1993), Novosibirsk traditionally claims to be on the left.
