Tara, about 28,000 inhabitants, is 300 km north of Omsk. It's the second largest city in the oblast. The temperate continental climate allows the cultivation of cereals, fodder and market garden products. It was founded in 1594 by Prince Andrei Yeletsky and a detachment of Cossacks. It is the very first Russian colony in the territory of the modern Omsk region. In 1669, Tara was ravaged by fire. The Cossack houses decorated with rich wooden lacework that you admire date from its reconstruction. The Spassky Cathedral (1791) was also rebuilt. Tara was a place of exile because it was quite far away: several Decembrists were deported there and Lithuanian and Polish prisoners.
