Founded in 1931, Khanty-Mansyisk, with a population of approximately 100,000, is the administrative centre of the Khanty and Mansi Autonomous District of the Khanty and Mansi indigenous peoples. Port of the Irtysh River (boat, the main mode of inter-city transport), 15 km from the mouth of the Ob River, it derives its income from freight and forestry industry. Mostly from hydrocarbon extraction/refining, since the territory of the district is the largest oil-gas reserve in Russia. Although Khanty-Mansiysk is not the largest city, it is rich and well-equipped, cheerful and warm. Yet lost and bordered by taiga, subject to the subarctic climate, it appears very dynamic and accustomed to welcoming travellers (mainly oil workers).
