Tyumen (788,666 inhabitants) has been the capital of the Tyumen Oblast since 1944. It is situated about 2,000 km from Moscow, on the banks of the Tura River (1,030 km), a navigable river that runs for almost 750 km. It is served by the Trans-Siberian Railway and is a strategic oil and gas industrial centre. Tyumen is a very important business centre. It is also, and above all, the oldest Russian city in Siberia, founded in 1586. Its architectural and cultural heritage makes it a wonderful trans-Siberian stopover. Its ancient and fabulous religious buildings, museums, experimental theatres and countless monuments will delight travellers passionate about art and history. Tyumen is easy to reach by road, rail and air.
