Former Kokaga, originally inhabited by fishermen, became Fort-Archambault in 1899, under the leadership of the French who built a military post, renamed Sarh during the period of «tchadisation» under François Tombalbaye, the city was the most important urban centre of colonial Chad and the place of Chad's "useful". Its large and peaceful mango-lined avenues were drawn by Governor Antonetti. The latter wanted to make the city the country's future capital! However, the development of cotton cultivation was less important in the region than in the Logone, because the city was isolated from the N'Djamena-Bangui road. The city was then a veritable colonial jewel, with its large houses bordering the river Chari, its outdoor cinemas, its stores full of food, its mild climate and the variety of its fruits and vegetables… The whaling could descend the river and reach N'Djamena in a pleasant cruise, and European hunters came from a long distance to shoot their prouesses and elephants. evening at the Stop Bar…From 1912 to 1918, the city experienced droughts, famines and severe colonial repression, which reduced its population. During the Second World War, the battalions of Free France held a garrison there. In 1958, the film Les Roots du ciel de John Huston was filmed with Juliette Greco and Errol Flynn, inspired by the work of Roman Gary.Sarh became the cradle of the first political leaders: François Tombalbaye N'Garta, first president of the country, and Jean Charlot Bakouré, father of Chadian trade Unionism. The years of civil war following the fall of François Tombalbaye marked the population profoundly and created a high exodus to Cameroon.Today Sarh is a city that looks like a large village with an old aura and a real charm. Some old renovated colonial buildings revive the glorious era of this city.
