An important port from the pre-Celtic period and then during the Roman occupation, Bénouville saw the first human community in the region established in its midst. Its strategic importance lasted until the D-Day landings. During the night of 5 to 6 June 1944, three gliders landed near the Bénouville bridge. The mission of the 90 British members of the 6th Airborne was to take the bridges of Bénouville and Ranville intact, enabling them to cross the canal and the Orne. As well as being steeped in history, Bénouville is a very pretty commune, with ancient dwellings stretching the length of each side of the road that crosses it.
