Thumrait is a gateway town on the main Muscat-Salalah route. Close to the Dhofar mountain range, the region benefits in part from the cool summer months. The inhabitants are mainly Bedouins, who make a living from their crops, livestock and local industries such as weaving. Once located on the caravan route that crossed the Arabian Peninsula, Thumrait is now the starting point for expeditions into the desert and to the city of Ubar. Thumrait is also a U.S. Army air base with a 4,000 m runway, which was very active during the Gulf Wars, and is home to the Harvest Falcon pre-positioned aircraft.
