72 km from Salalah. Mirbat, once the capital of Dhofar, takes its name from Marbat al-Khail, which means "the place where horses are tied up". This suggests the existence of an important seaport from which thoroughbreds were exported from Arabia in exchange for spices and gold from India and Africa. The old village is abandoned, but still has beautifully carved doors. Today the town is known for its production of incense burners and sardines. A restored fort can be seen, which could recount the epic battle of 1972, when 9 men of the British Special Forces held 300 Dhofarian guerrillas in respect.
