BAYEUX TAPESTRY MUSEUM
Bayeux Tapestry Museum with its remarkable embroidery, one of the most precious testimonies to the art of living in the Middle Ages.
Listed in the Memory of the World register by UNESCO, this captivating embroidery is the star of the Bessin capital! This unique work of art has been seen by nearly 16 million pairs of eyes since 1983. Almost 1,000 years old, the Bayeux Tapestry continues to fascinate. The dimensions of this piece of history command respect: almost 70 metres long and 50 centimetres wide. This 11th-century work not only illustrates the story of William the Conqueror’s conquest of England in 1066 but also remains one of the most precious testimonies to the art of living in the Middle Ages. The Tapestry, made of woollen threads embroidered on a linen canvas, and its context, are explained in three stages. Admirably preserved, it can be devoured in its entirety, like a gigantic comic book brimming with winks, or a thrilling adventure film. The audioguide (included in the price of admission) is brilliant - even if you’d better be a fan of medieval music, which we are! - suitable for all ages, it describes the event scene by scene and is a real help during the visit. After discovering the work, the tour continues on the second floor of the museum, where a vast room explains not only the secrets behind its creation but also the themes of daily life at the time of William and Harold, illustrated by splendid models, impressive mannequins and numerous period objects, including a drakkar! The visit ends with a 16-minute docu-drama on the Battle of Hastings, which sets the record straight and rehabilitates the figure of Harold, hastily dismissed as a historical villain.
The Bayeux Tapestry is also accessible to the visually impaired. The Valentin Haüy association has created three emblematic scenes in relief to enable the visually impaired to touch it and feel its emotion. A first that could be continued as part of the new museum planned in three years’ time. A major restoration campaign is due to start in 2024 and run until 2027 when the masterpiece will once again be on display in Bayeux. The restoration is necessary to preserve this 11th-century work of textile art, which has suffered a great deal of damage over the years. All in all, an unforgettable visit that will appeal to art and history enthusiasts and curious visitors alike.
Les audio guides font très bien leur travail. Tout est bien expliqué et simple à comprendre.
