Covering 1,845 ha between the Caen plain and the Pays d'Auge, Bavent is the largest commune in the canton of Cabourg. Its history is a summary of many histories, as Bavent has known no less than 3 names: Batvent in the 11th century, Batventum in the 13th and Bavant in the 18th. William the Conqueror used Bavent trees to build the ships of his fleet before he conquered England. During the Second World War, after much suffering, the commune was finally liberated on August 17, 1944. Today, as in the past, Bavent is inseparable from its clay quarries, which supply Terreal, the world leader in flat roof tiles.
