Jebel Akhdar, "the green mountain", takes its name from the many crops that cover the slopes of the Jebel. Rugged, gouged... but also verdant and full of adorable villages, this rocky barrier is one of the most beautiful in Oman. On the Saiq plateau, at an altitude of 2,000 m, a variety of fruit trees are grown, including pomegranates, lemons, peaches, apples and cherries. The plateau is also known for its terraced cultivation of onions and, above all, roses. The latter, in full bloom in April, are used to make rosewater, which locals use for its medicinal virtues and as a perfume. As far as tourism is concerned, Jebel Akhdar offers real attractions for hikers: mild temperatures even in summer (rarely above 30°C), marked trails, some of which pass through picturesque villages in a grandiose setting interspersed with ebony gorges. The region is well developed and now boasts a number of hotels, some of them luxury.
