In other words, "the mountain of the sun": a name that owes its origin to the beauty of the sunrise and sunset in this very steep part of the sultanate. A normal vehicle will take you up several kilometers to reach the Shams plateau, via the good track on the right, just before the military base. The panorama is grandiose, opening onto a canyon - a formidable example of erosion - and the view plunges down through narrow cliffs that can be followed for several kilometers. Continuing straight ahead on the main track, you pass a number of hotel-campsites and then, 2 km further on, the old dry-stone hamlet recently transformed by the Sama group into a Heritage-type tourist accommodation, respectful of the local heritage (just 3 rooms and a restaurant). Two hiking trails start from here, including the famous W6a, which leads to an abandoned village built into the side of a canyon: impressive!
