A stronghold of the Al Ibriyin tribe, which was very active during the tribal wars that tore the interior of the sultanate apart in the 1950s, Al Hamra is worth a visit for its well-preserved old town: no fort, but watchtowers on the hills and beautiful mud houses with ornate beamed ceilings. Some of the former notables' houses are currently being renovated and are already welcoming travellers. Another house has been transformed into a living museum, and has been a must-see in the area for years, especially as it is possible to photograph women in traditional dress.
