Izki is located about 115 km from Muscat. Once called Jarnan, this city welcomed Islamization and was renamed Izki, a term derived from the word zakah: the purifying tax or "legal alms", the amount of which is determined in the Qur'an according to one's possessions. Izki is home to the Falaj Al-Mulki, the oldest in the country, whose 360 canals once irrigated the area's vast palm grove. It was one of the most important water networks in Oman, which has unfortunately deteriorated over time. Some beautiful remains remain, including a superb example of a stone tunnel. Izki also has an ancient necropolis.
