With around 20,000 inhabitants, Khasab is Musandam's largest town. An airport, a small town center, two renovated forts, three schools and, scattered around the palm grove, a few low sand-colored houses - that's how this peaceful village, wedged between sea and mountains, looks. As in other parts of the sultanate, the number of inhabitants varies according to the season: in winter, when the land is watered by the rains, part of the population lives in the mountains, where, thanks to the richness of the water table, there are vast cultivated areas (wheat in particular). In summer, people move to the towns, some in government housing, to harvest dates and fish. This way of life is at the root of a type of construction specific to Musandam: the Bait al Qufl, a kind of warehouse with very thick walls in which, during the seasonal migration period, families used to store their most precious possessions - jars filled with foodstuffs needed for survival, for example. Another local peculiarity: the falaj system is not used in Musandam, where people use rainwater (wells and cisterns) or sea water (desalination plants). When it comes to entertainment, the port is the place to be, especially in the mornings when the fishermen return. Not far away, a fort converted into a museum stands guard over the harbor and is well worth a visit.
