A 1-hour drive from Muscat, the village of Nakhal stands proudly amid superb palm groves, from which it takes its name, derived from the Arabic nakhell: date palm. The area is famous for its fort, Husn Al Heem, built on a rocky outcrop at the foot of the 1,588 m-high Western Hajar. The citadel was built long before the Islamic era to protect the vast date plantations. As well as the structure itself, it offers another major asset: beautiful views of the surrounding area. Strolling through the palm grove 2 km from the fort, you'll come across another curiosity: the Al-Thawarah hot springs.
