In the 18th century, Suwaiq was an important trading port like those of Barka and Sohar. Today it is a small but dynamic community, but it has lost its importance. By following the main road towards the sea, one arrives at a fort which dominates the beach (8:30 am to 2:30 pm, closed Friday and Saturday). Built at the beginning of the 17th century by Imam Nasir bin Murshid, founder of the Ya'ruba dynasty, it is a quadrangular fort delimited by three round towers and a square fort. Passing the sabah (= entrance hall), one reaches what used to be the Wali's 'apartments', with elegant ogival arches, stuccoes and other decorative niches.
