Legend has it that Sohar is the birthplace of Sindbad the Sailor, hero and adventurer of the Thousand and One Nights... A whole oriental past! More concretely, it is today the main city of the Batinah: a booming metropolis that should see more and more hotels, stores and restaurants in the years to come. Arriving in the city is marked by a succession of traffic circles. A roundabout dominated by a globe on a pedestal marks the entrance to the town center. This is followed by Sohar Street, also intersected by three traffic circles! The majority of shops are clustered around the first traffic circle, Al Wiqaybah. This is the city's new commercial district, laid out in the shape of a square. Stores are grouped together in arcades, and it's a pleasant place to stroll along stores selling clothes, sandals, jewelry and more. Old Sohar is 2 km away, on the seafront, and boasts a 13th-century fort and recently redesigned cornice, forming a homogeneous, predominantly white ensemble. Very few stores have resisted relocation, and only a few tailors remain. The fine sandy beach is one of the most beautiful in the country.
