Just 18 kilometers from the coast, Masirah Island, still little-visited by travelers, is an ideal spot for sailing sports, and its reputation among kitesurfers is well established, as is its status as an international breeding spot for sea turtles, especially the peacock turtle. Although not very well developed, the island has a small town, Hilf (population 8,000), built lengthways along the seafront. It's the only place where you can get fuel and food, unless you help yourself directly from the ocean or buy fish from the locals. The other villages are little more than hamlets of fishermen's cottages, or even simple signs planted in the middle of nowhere. Of medium size (65 km long by 17 km wide at most), Masirah is characterized by a monotonous relief made up of a few high points (Jabal Madrub at 256 m) overlooking ophiolitic rocks and endless stretches of white sand against a backdrop of turquoise sea. It takes a good two hours to drive from north to south, in a landscape that changes with every kilometer: mountains, sand, coves and wadis. The northern end of the island is not accessible, as it is occupied by the former RAF installations that have been an "ultra-secret" Omani military base since 1980. We recommend staying for two or three days to get the feel of the island and have time to wander around the trails.
