Ras al Jinz is a silver-sand bay encircled by superb cliffs. The beach is bordered and bisected by strikingly shaped rocks. However, you're unlikely to spend a whole day basking here, as the area is an international breeding ground for the green turtle. To prevent the inopportune comings and goings of 4x4 vehicles and preserve the reptiles' natural habitat, the government has not only classified the area as a protected zone, but has also decided to restrict access. A Visitor and Research Center blocks the entrance to the beach, and approaches to the turtles are strictly controlled. The only reason to visit Ras al Jinz is to observe this miracle of nature - a must on any tour of the sultanate's natural riches. While Ras al Jinz is the best-organized place to see turtles laying eggs and/or hatching, you should be aware that turtles can be seen elsewhere in the sultanate, particularly in large numbers on Masirah Island. In the absence of a professional guide, however, the chances are slimmer.
