80 kilometres south-east of Bragança, far from the rest of the country, Miranda do Douro is a pretty little border town, perched above gorges that dominate the Douro Valley and its International Douro Natural Park. Because of its geographical remoteness, it has been able to better preserve its heritage and culture. Mirandais (Portugal's second official language) is still spoken here, which is directly derived from Latin. On the first weekend in August, the region lives to the sound of the Sendim Inter-Celtic Festival. Miranda do Douro is also the starting (or finishing) point of a 15-kilometre linear hike (GR 36) along the Douro.
