On the road from Vila Real to Chaves, you'll pass by two spa towns: Pedras Salgadas, which bottles the country's best-selling sparkling water, and Vidago, whose Campilho waters are reputed to be excellent for the digestive system. Renowned since Roman times for its thermal waters (73°C) and founded in 78, the ancient Aquae Flavia (which is why a resident of Chaves is a Flaviense) is crossed by the Tâmega, spanned by a Roman bridge built in the 3rd century. The town is set in a beautiful valley between the Padrela mountains and Galicia. In summer, the textile market attracts families back home
