Big fortified village in the middle of vineyards. It is in this small spa town that the best vinho verde of the region is produced: the Alvarinho. The town is said to have been rebuilt on the ruins of a village in 1374 BC by a Greek who called it Orosion ("Holy Mount"). The Celts and then the Romans took control of this strategic city, followed by the king of Sueve Hermeric. In 410 A.D., Monção asserts itself from the reign of Sancho I of Portugal. Dinis I, in his war against Castile, decided in 1306 to reinforce the fortifications and to create a castle with a tower, which was destroyed in successive wars.
