Guimarães, it is little known, is the cradle of the Portuguese kingdom. It was from this city that Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, reconquered the whole country. Today, this proud city has lost nothing of its glorious past. Its center is superbly preserved and very lively. It is also a dynamic city with a large university pole oriented towards new technologies. In the past, the economy of Guimarães was focused on the textile, knife and shoe industry. Today it has also become a creative city and a platform for the arts. The city was elected European Capital of Culture in 2012.
