It was from here that the boats (with sails!) loaded with Port wine set out for Vila Nova de Gaia. The town is the former centre of the oldest "Denomination of Controlled Origin" in the world (the patent for Port wine was registered in 1756 by the Marquês de Pombal). It is a good starting point to discover the secrets and tradition of port wine. Visit the Port Museum and set off along the roads to discover this territory shaped by terraces over the years by tenacious and daring men. Peso da Regua is the almost obligatory crossing point between Porto and the Douro Valley, or for those who want to go as far as Miranda do Douro.
