Amarante's location on the banks of the Tâmega and the very special quality of the light that floods it are at least worth a stop to appreciate the historic center. If you spend only a few hours here, two streets concentrate most of what you should see. They are separated by the beautiful 18th century three-arched bridge. It is quiet and very pleasant. On the other side of the bridge, Rua Cândido dos Reis lines up its typical old houses from the 17th century. Not to be missed: the celebrations in honor of the patron saint of the city, São Gonçalo, whose church and monastery are named after him, in January, and the annual fair in June.
