Belmonte is situated on a hill dominated by a beautiful castle. This is where the last Marrano Jewish community resided, having settled here since the 15th century, when it fled from the Castile of the Inquisition. This is the city where Pedro Alvares Cabral (1467-1526) was born, the man who discovered Brazil in 1500! You will see his statue in the main square, as well as the great fountain. Not far from the fire station, a path meanders through olive groves and leads to a place well known to the city's "elders", A pata do longo homem, "the werewolf's footprint", which is actually a simple hollow in the rock in the shape of a footprint.
