The life of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the only Portuguese "Just Among the Nations", deserves to be honoured, if only by stopping for a few moments in Cabanas de Viriato, his native town. This aristocrat helped thousands of Jews escape from the Nazis. While stationed in Bordeaux, unlike the orders he had received, he issued the visas that allowed them to leave Europe via Lisbon. Salazar did not forgive him, causing him to be harassed until his death in 1954.
