The Ria d'Aveiro is a huge lagoon that tapers to the north towards the Ovar channel and, to the south (the Ria de Costa Nova), towards a long sandy arm that separates the confluence of several rivers and the ocean. For the record, in 1575, the lagoon was closed following a storm, and it was not until 1808 that a channel was dug between the ria and the ocean. It was at this time that pine trees were planted to fix the sand. You will see beautiful marshes in a completely rural area when you explore the northern part of the lagoon which goes deep inland. And our favourite is the São Jacinto nature reserve, for its nature, birds, and wild beaches.
