This beautiful set of fourteen Corinthian columns is one of the symbols of the Alentejo.

Emblematic monument of the city, called for a long time "Temple of Diana", this beautiful set of fourteen Corinthian columns is one of the symbols of the Alentejo. According to reconstructions, its roof was made of marble, and it was surrounded by water mirrors to enhance the place. Built in the first century of our era, in the Middle Ages, its foundations were used to build a large slaughterhouse over it. This last building was completely destroyed by an earthquake in the 19th century, exposing again the remains of the Roman period..

Magnifique et surprenant, trônant sur une belle place, tranchant avant tous ces édifices religieux et des bâtiments typiques. C'est l'un des sites incontournables de votre visite du centre historique d'Evora.

Quelques colonnes subsistent. En réalité, on n'a aucune preuve qu'il s'agisse bien d'un temple dédié à Diane, mais en tout cas, les habitants d'Evora l'ont nommé comme ça car ils aimaient l'idée de consacrer un lieu à la Déesse de la Chasse.
