A beautiful, gently sloping city, dominated by the Templar castle rebuilt on a Moorish base and the church of Santiago, it was Romanized from the first century BC to thefifth century AD. The Moorish occupation lasted until 1217, and then the city came under Christian rule in the 13th century. First in the hands of Princess Vetacia, the castle passed back into the hands of the Order of Santiago upon her death. In the 18th century, Santiago do Cacém was a strategic retreat during the French invasions. On the outskirts of the city, a road leads to the ruins of Miróbriga. On the way there is the natural reserve of the lakes of Santo André and Sancha.
